[Alix was among the first group of mother's who participated in the workshops as part of their sons' residential treatment program. Two years later, understanding the impact of the workshops on families, she was one of the founders of Soltura. This statement was written after her first workshop.]
The Women’s Workshop — there are truly no words to describe the experience. So, for the more ‘visual’ among us, let me draw a comparison for you that might help. Picture the main character form the movie Shawshank Redemption after being in prison for many years, crawling through a long tunnel of sewage in order to find his freedom on the other side.
Now picture a group of mothers and sons, along with those who have helped show them the way, being catapulted out of their own personal tunnels of [sewage] into the clear blue ocean — reconnected to their self-worth, to real love, and to their dreams…beautiful, strong and free. Yes! We were free to dance in the moonlight singing at the top of our lungs and free to choose the paths we will take from here.
There was an indescribable power that surrounded us and I know for me the gifts of this experience have left me forever changed. I opened my eyes to the world and to those around me, including my son, in a way I never have before. I found a new rhythm in my soul. It was nothing short of a miracle!
